What to wear to a photo session

You know how when you’re flipping through a magazine, and you come across a feature and you see a family and they all look so put together and coordinated, but not matchy-matchy? Their personalities shine through and you really get a sense of each person’s individual style.

This is not an accident. It’s called “styling” and every magazine shoot is styled by someone, and they usually get a credit for it! I’m no master stylist, but I know what looks best in the type of lifestyle shooting I do.

First off, everyone needs to wear clothing that fits them properly, flatters the figure, and is age appropriate. Unless you’re at a wedding, chances are your three year old will look silly in a tuxedo–and moms will look silly wearing the exact same outfit as their teenage daughters.

So, this brings me to my next point. Don’t try to match. Just stop it. I hear you thinking “but how will we know it looks good together if it isn’t all the same?!?”

Do you and your spouse dress alike every day? Do you have the same favorite color? The same favorite music? If the answer to any of these questions is “no,” then tell me why on earth you would want a large-scale art print of the two of you dressed in the exact same outfit? What does that say about who you are and what you like? Not a thing.

But there have to be common interests somewhere. Are you outdoorsy? Sporty? Musically inclined? Pick a theme and run with it (not too far, now, we’re not doing caricature here)

Outdoorsy? You know jeans and boots are a good starting point for the whole family. Maybe mom and the girls can wear  scarves and some fingerless gloves. Dad can rock a plaid shirt and the boys can wear long sleeved t-shirts under a button down. Pick a color palette that works with your theme: dark greens, browns, burgundy, mustard, cream.

Musical? How about a slightly edgy grey and black base with jeans for the guys, and jeans or black casual dresses for the girls. Don’t forget to layer and accessorize–practicality might say that big earrings and necklaces or a chunky cuff bracelet get in the way of your every day life, but they can be a fun way to show your personality on a photo shoot.

Sporty? How about using a favorite team’s colors as the inspiration for your shoot? Taking my college colors of blue and white into account, I might dress my family in jeans, put a blue sweater on my hubs, a white sweater for myself with a blue scarf, and dress my twin sons in jeans in blue plaid shirts. The idea isn’t to look like a cheerleading squad, but maybe pay a little homage to a favorite team.

Not everyone will fit into one of those three categories, but you get the idea. Have fun, and feel free to ask for guidance if you need it–bring a few outfit choices for everyone if you want to cover a few different looks or if you aren’t certain what would look best.

I heart Hank and Joel

I Heart Faces weekly photo contest is all about PETS this week! How great is that? Especially when I have my Hank to show off… And of course, what better way to show him off than in a photo that shows just how sweet he is. :)

The T family, a large family session! {Canton,GA family photographer}

Changes to the website today!

I’ve finally made some much needed changes to the website today. If you’ve visited the site before, you’ll recognize the layout is essentially the same, but the portfolios have been updated and divided into three categories.

The first category is called “Soul Strings” and if I were to play favorites, this would be it. This portfolio is strictly black and white, sepia, or split-toned photos, inspired by my film photography roots. A film photo or two may sneak in there from time to time as well, when I have opportunities to shoot film again.

The second category is called “Classic Rock” and it’s where you might find some more daring stylistic choices, as well as non-portrait work. The images themselves inspired the processing, so you might find textures and bold color pops.

The last category is called “Bubblegum Pop” and it is full of clean, simple processing.

I hope if you’re visiting my blog, you’ll have a chance to stop by the website as well and take a metaphorical stroll through the galleries. Enjoy!

Some thoughts on perfection

Originally uploaded by Aimee Benson

“… A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection.” -Fight Club

Seems odd, using a quote from Fight Club for a blog post about my kids…well, maybe not so odd, knowing my kids. ;)

But really, this post isn’t about my kids at all, it’s about chasing a perfect moment, something that is just part of photography–and generally, a photographer knows when they’ve got it. You can take 300 shots in a session, but without the one, The Moment, they are nothing. Since photographers know this, it becomes a dance–especially working with children. Loosen them up, get them comfortable–before they get tired and don’t want to cooperate anymore.

When photographing your own children, they are so darned comfortable with you, they don’t want you taking their photo at all–the camera and mom jumping around acting crazy? That’s just part of the scenery for them! So I’ve been chasing this moment for a long, long time now. Both of my boys, looking into my camera and smiling. A simple, magical, perfect moment. The boys I know and love, their personalities so clear and distinct.

The feeling I get when I look at this photo is why I started taking photos. It’s worth remembering, from time to time.

What is Custom Photography?

Time for a little session of “Aimee Explains…”

People ask me all the time what I do. I tell them I’m a photographer. Sometimes I say I’m a “Custom Photographer.” Okay, so what does that mean???

Well, it means a few things really. One, it means that no two shoots are alike. This means there is no “sit on this mark, look right here, say cheee-eeeeeeez!” That doesn’t mean it’s all fly-by-the-seat of my pants–a lot of the shots that I take are carefully thought out before we start our session. However, I do believe in following the spirit of the day, and you’ll find I’m often taking photos of you when you’re not “posing” for me.

I might set you up in a pose, take a few snaps of you in the pose, and then when you relax and whisper something to one of your family members, and they giggle in response, I’ll snap a few more when you think I’m not looking. This is part of the process, and it flows organically from working with you and getting to know your family. Often the posed shots are just test shots–taken to get the framing right and the lighting right while I wait for the real you to emerge.

I am sensitive to your concerns about your appearance. Let’s face it, very few men and women make it through the teenage years (let alone pregnancy/childbirth/the first 8 months of parenthood, etc) without a few insecurities. I understand that you might find it hard to smile broadly when someone is taking your photo. You’re not alone in this. I will continue to be sensitive to your concerns. You’ll be your most beautiful when you aren’t worried about how “that photographer” is going to make you look. I’m asking you to trust me, to believe me when I say I think you’re beautiful and I want to show you why. It’s a leap of faith, I know, and one that is usually taken only with the closest of family and friends.

In the end, custom photography is a blend of orchestration and improvisation. It’s like live TV. You never know exactly what’s going to happen, and that’s half the fun.

And long after I’m gone, you can look up at the photos on the wall of your home and smile at the unexpected memories of the moment.

Josh and Jess: engagement session

Our friends Josh and Jess are recently engaged, so today we ventured out in the heat and humidity for which the south is famous, and I took some photos of the happy couple. Their love for each other is so evident when you are with them that they are just a joy to be around. Josh and Jessica, we wish you years of happiness together!

Best part of being a mama to twins…

My sweet babies aren’t really babies any more. But they are still sweet as can be. This morning I was snapping some pics of them in the kitchen (for no reason other than they are so stinkin’ cute) and Joel yelled “RO-MING! Kisses!” and they threw their arms around each other and Roman planted one on Joel. :)

New website is live, as is new shopping cart!

woo-hoo! It’s been a busy week chez benson, as I’ve been switching my website over to a new host, with a new design, and setting up to use smugmug as my proofing/commerce galleries.

I decided to go with smugmug because I liked the idea of giving my customers control over ordering their prints. They don’t have to call me or email me to place an order, they can do it right there in their private, password-protected proofing gallery! I’ve also set up three cost-saving packages that they can order direct, and of course, I’m always happy to put together custom packages which can then be ordered directly through smugmug!

Check out the new webpage at http://aimeebensonphotography.com and visit the smugmug site at http://aimeebensonphotography.smugmug.com
